All About Self Storage

Personal storage units for your personal storage needs

What is a Self Storage Unit?

Find a storage solution that meets your self storage needs

At their most basic level, self storage units are enclosed storage spaces that you can rent to store your personal items. They come in a variety of types and sizes, and some have other special amenities as well.

Typically, you rent a storage unit from a self storage facility that can have anywhere from a dozen or so units to hundreds (or even thousands) of storage units.

Your storage unit should have a door that closes and the ability to be locked to ensure the safety of your belongings.

Common Features to Look For

Here are some common amenities and features you may find when looking for a self storage unit:

Roll-up doors
Gated facility access
24-hour surveillance
On-site moving supplies
Carts & dollies
Moving trucks
24/7 access
Regular pest control

Types of Storage Units

There are many types of storage units, but they can usually be boiled down into the following categories

Drive-Up Self Storage Units

These storage units have doors that open directly onto the lot. Because of this, you can pull your vehicle right up to the storage unit’s door. This makes loading and unloading easier since you won’t need to carry items across the facility’s property—you unload right from the vehicle to the unit.

Indoor Self Storage Units

Interior storage units have doors that open onto a hallway within a building. With interior entry, you can get out of the elements when at your storage unit. These units also provide a little extra peace of mind because the building’s doors provide an extra security checkpoint.

Climate-Controlled Storage Units

A climate-controlled storage unit can be either drive-up or interior access. These storage units feature some method of controlling the temperature and sometimes humidity levels inside the storage unit. This helps keep items safer from the elements, and some items benefit greatly from climate control (such as clothing and furniture).

Enclosed Vehicle Storage

Sometimes you can even store vehicles inside a storage unit. Depending on the size of the storage unit—and the rules of the storage facility—you may be able to store anything from motorcycles to boats to even Class A RVs. Many facilities also offer outdoor parking options, but an enclosed boat or RV storage unit offers a bit of extra protection.
